LibraryThe Library is an oasis of calm and a popular venue for all keen readers, situated across the road from the English department on the ground floor in the Performing Arts block. The Library has recently been refurbished and provides a dedicated reading environment where students can come and lose themselves in a book before school, during break, lunch and after school. It is open every day, Monday to Friday 8am – 4pm. The Library is staffed by Mrs Stevenson, the Library Manager who is on hand to offer suggestions, support students in selecting a book and encourage reading for pleasure. The Library Manager is supported by student librarians who are involved in all the day to day tasks, as well as special events at throughout the year. Student librarians are also expected to inspire other students to read and borrow books.
All students are automatically members of the Library when they start at the school. Students are encouraged to respect the resources and to take responsibility for the books they borrow; they are expected to return their books in a timely manner and in good condition so they can be enjoyed by others. The Library has approximately 6,000 fiction and non-fiction books, together with a selection of magazines. There is comfortable seating for 26 students, with several dedicated reading areas, including 6 giant bean bags where students are able to relax and escape in a book. Students may borrow up to two books at a time, for a period of three weeks. The broad fiction stock reflects the diversity of our students, the importance of reading for pleasure and reading as a foundation for educational success. The stock is kept up to date with new fiction on a termly basis and appropriate recommendations from students are welcomed. The non-fiction section complements the curriculum and contains resources that offer further reading on all subjects. All KS3 English students have a lesson in the library once a term to improve their reading resilience and improve overall literacy. After school, the Library is available for independent study and students are able to borrow a Chromebook to complete their homework if required. For reading inspiration the attached documents provide recommendations for all year groups and all of the featured books are available to borrow from the library: Recommended Reads - Year 7 Recommended reads - Year 8 Recommended Reads - Year 9 Recommended Reads - Years 10 and 11 |
