Homework

At Kings we believe that homework is essential for a student’s development. We believe there are no excuses for homework to not be effectively set by staff, completed by students and supported by parents. Homework provides the opportunity increase knowledge, fluency or proficiency in a particular area.  The evidence shows that high-quality homework can add up to 5 months’ worth of progress in a year at secondary school.

Homework should:

•  Encourage students to develop the skills, confidence and motivation needed to study effectively on their own.  This is vital for the future of lifelong learning and adaptability.
• Consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding developed at school.
• Extend school learning.
• Sustain the involvement of parents and carers in the management of students’ learning and keep them informed about the work students are doing.
• Manage particular demands such as GCSE coursework.

Tasks that are set for homework will have a clear objective and be linked to the programme of study.  They may offer development and/or extension of learning for all students.

Homework is always be planned in advance as part of an ongoing scheme of work and students given the appropriate amount of time to complete it. Students will not normally be expected to complete homework within 24 hours as this does not give students an opportunity to ask their teacher for clarification if they are unsure about a homework task set.
